Barite (baryte) is a barium sulfate (BaSO₄) that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It forms tabular or prismatic crystals and comes in many colors – from colorless to white, blue, yellow, and brown. With a density of 4.5 g/cm³, it is unusually heavy. Barite mainly forms in hydrothermal veins and as a gangue mineral in ore deposits. Important locations include Germany (Black Forest), England, Morocco, the USA, and China.

Barite has a Mohs hardness of 3–3.5, making it relatively soft and scratch-sensitive. It should be handled carefully and stored separately from harder stones. Clean only with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Avoid acids, saltwater, and ultrasonic cleaning. To recharge, place it on an amethyst geode or rock crystal cluster.

Barite can be confused with calcite but is significantly heavier. White barite also resembles feldspar or dolomite.
