Meaning

Sunstone has been valued since ancient times and was considered a symbol of vitality and joie de vivre. It is said to help one see the positive aspects of life and reduce depression and gloom. It is believed to strengthen faith in good and personal happiness, as well as promote optimism and drive.

Alleged effect

Sunstone is said to help the wearer free themselves from bad moods, disadvantages, and feelings of failure. Sunstone is said to promote self-healing powers and have a stimulating effect on the autonomic nervous system. It is also said to contribute to the harmonious functioning of the organs. Users also report that sunstone can be helpful for asthma.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Sunstone (Heliolite) is an oligoclase or labradorite feldspar with inclusions of hematite, goethite, or copper that create the characteristic aventurescence sparkle. The color ranges from orange to gold to red, depending on the type of inclusions. Copper-containing Oregon sunstones are particularly sought after. Locations include the USA (Oregon), Norway, India, Canada, and Tanzania.

Pflege & Reinigung

Sunstone has a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5. Clean under running water, recharge in the sun (fitting for its name!). It is relatively robust, but feldspar can be cleavable – protect it from hard impacts. Do not use acids.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Sunstone is sometimes confused with blue goldstone. Blue goldstone is synthetic with uniform glitter, while sunstone shows irregular, natural sparkling effects. There are also similarities with brown aventurine. Oregon sunstones with copper inclusions are unique and unmistakable.
