Meaning

Chinese jade is said to be excellent for establishing boundaries, balancing mood swings, and finding inner peace. It is said to have a calming effect on the nerves and protect against external stressors. Serpentine is also said to support peaceful conflict resolution and reduce aggression and belligerence.

Alleged effect

Serpentine is said to have antispasmodic properties, relieve menstrual cramps, and support magnesium metabolism. Therefore, it is said to be helpful for cardiac arrhythmias as well as stomach and intestinal complaints, diarrhea, and constipation.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Serpentine is a mineral group of magnesium silicates with the general formula Mg₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄. The main representatives are antigorite, chrysotile, and lizardite. Serpentine forms through the transformation (metamorphism) of olivine and pyroxene. It occurs in many shades of green, from light green to almost black. Locations include China, Afghanistan, New Zealand, India, Norway, and Switzerland.

Pflege & Reinigung

Serpentine has a Mohs hardness of 2.5–4, making it relatively soft. It should be handled carefully and stored separately from harder stones. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. No acids, no saltwater, no ultrasound. To recharge, moonlight or green plants are suitable.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Chinese jade is often confused with genuine jade (nephrite) — this is even intentional, as the trade name suggests it. Genuine nephrite is harder (6-6.5 vs. 2.5-4) and denser. Aventurine can also be similarly green but is a quartz and significantly harder. In trade, the designation "jade" is not protected, which is why many green stones are mistakenly sold as jade.
