Meaning

Nephrite is valued, especially in China and New Zealand, as a powerful protective stone against aggressive outside influences. It is said to help one become less susceptible to influence and maintain one's moral standards even in difficult situations. It is also said to promote tolerance and neutrality and reduce intense tension and emotions, leading to long-term inner peace.

Alleged effect

Nephrite is said to have a positive influence on kidney function. It is said to prevent the formation of kidney stones and counteract deposits in the urinary tract, as well as to have positive effects on kidney inflammation. It is also said to have a detoxifying effect, which can support the body in the elimination of toxins.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Nephrite is a calcium-magnesium-iron silicate from the amphibole group (tremolite-actinolite series). It forms extremely hard, felt-like woven crystal aggregates and is tougher than steel. Nephrite should not be confused with jadeite – both are "jade," but mineralogically different. The green color comes from iron. Locations include New Zealand, Canada, Russia, China, and Australia.

Pflege & Reinigung

Nephrite has a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5 and is extremely tough and break-resistant. Clean under running water, recharge on rock crystal. It is robust for everyday use. Avoid acids and sharp chemicals. Jade becomes more beautiful over time – contact with skin gives it a natural shine.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Nephrite is often confused with jadeite, serpentine (Chinese jade), aventurine, or dyed quartzite. Jadeite is harder (6.5–7) and can be more intensely green. Serpentine is significantly softer. In trade, the term "jade" is not always used correctly – many "jade" products consist of serpentine or dyed material.
