Meaning

Wearers of lapis lazuli are said to become rulers of their own spiritual realm. Through its purported qualities, such as strengthening self-confidence, dignity, sincerity, and honesty, it is said to help them express their opinions clearly and be who they are, without being held back by false compromises or reserve.

Alleged effect

Lapis lazuli is said to have a positive effect on throat complaints, such as the larynx or vocal cords. It is also said to lower blood pressure and prolong menstrual cycles. It can also be used as a supportive treatment for insect bites and sunburn.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Lapis lazuli is a rock mixture of lazurite (blue), pyrite (golden inclusions), and calcite (white veins). The best qualities have been sourced from the mines of Badakhshan (Afghanistan) for over 6,000 years. In the Middle Ages, it was ground into the precious pigment ultramarine.

Pflege & Reinigung

More sensitive than quartz (hardness 5.5). Clean only with lukewarm water and a soft cloth – no soap or chemicals, as the contained calcite is sensitive to acid. Recharge in moonlight. Do not soak in water for extended periods.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Sodalite is the most common confusion partner – it is also blue but without golden pyrite inclusions and is usually cheaper. Dyed jasper or magnesite is occasionally sold as lapis. High-quality lapis shows deep blue with fine, gold-glimmering pyrite.
