Meaning

Magnesite contains magnesium, which explains the close similarity in its name. In crystal healing, magnesite is considered a calming and balancing stone. It is said to relieve stress and nervousness, as well as to have antispasmodic, detoxifying, and relaxing effects. Therefore, it is often used for headaches, migraines, and colic. It is also said to have a supportive effect on anxiety and depressive moods.

Alleged effect

With its balancing element, magnesite is said to increase emotional resilience. It thus helps with volatile emotions such as anger or irritability, but is also said to support better listening and the ability to put oneself in the background. This can help its wearer develop patience, devotion, and self-love.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃) that crystallizes in the trigonal system. It forms rhombohedral crystals but usually occurs in massive, cryptocrystalline form. The white color with gray veining is typical, but there are also yellow and brown varieties. It forms through the metamorphism of magnesium-rich rocks or through the weathering of serpentine. Locations include Brazil, Australia, Austria, China, and Greece.

Pflege & Reinigung

Magnesite has a Mohs hardness of 3.5–4.5 and is relatively soft. Protect from scratches and impacts. Clean with lukewarm water – no acids (reacts with acid!). To recharge, use rock crystal or moonlight. Not suitable for gemstone water.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Magnesite is often confused with howlite – both are white with gray veining. Howlite is slightly softer and lighter. Dyed magnesite is often sold as a turquoise imitation – the low price and uniform coloring are indicators of imitation. Genuine magnesite reacts weakly to acid (slight fizzing).
