Meaning

Moonstone was named after the celestial body because its gentle glow is reminiscent of the light of the moon. In many cultures, it is associated with the moon and its symbolic qualities such as femininity, intuition, and emotional balance. It is therefore not surprising that it is said to be helpful in cases of lunar obsession or lucid dreaming. It is also said to facilitate dream recall in the morning.

Alleged effect

As a stone of femininity, moonstone is said to help harmonize the menstrual cycle. Some women report that their cycles have aligned with the lunar cycle by wearing this stone. In general, it is said to synchronize the body clock with natural rhythms and increase sensitivity and intuition.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group (orthoclase/adular) and displays the typical bluish-white shimmer (adularescence) through alternating layers of orthoclase and albite. Light is refracted at these layers, creating the moon-like glow.

Pflege & Reinigung

Handle with care – with a Mohs hardness of 6 and perfect cleavage, moonstone is more sensitive than quartz. Clean under lukewarm water and charge in moonlight (especially full moon). Avoid impacts and ultrasonic cleaning.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Do not confuse with rainbow moonstone (labradorite) – this belongs to the plagioclase series and shows a colorful play of colors instead of a gentle shimmer. Synthetic "moonstone" (opal glass) has a more uniform shimmer without natural variations.
