Meaning

Peridot, the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine, is known for its vibrant green to olive-green color, which is due to its high iron content. This stone is said to help one break free from external influences. It is also said to help transform negative feelings such as envy, resentment, or selfishness and release pent-up pain or emotions. Furthermore, it is said to help the wearer recognize their own mistakes and become aware of their shortcomings, which can provide the impetus to repair the damage caused.

Alleged effect

Peridot is said to have powerful detoxifying effects and stimulate the liver. It is said to stimulate the metabolism and be helpful for skin problems such as warts, acne, and pimples.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Peridot is the gemstone variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄). It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. Its green color comes exclusively from iron – the more iron, the darker the green. It forms deep in the Earth's mantle and reaches the surface through volcanism. Locations include Pakistan (Kashmir), Myanmar, China, Egypt (Zabargad), USA (Arizona), and Vietnam. It is also found in pallasite meteorites.
Pflege & Reinigung

Peridot has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, but it is cleavable and therefore sensitive to impact. Clean under lukewarm water. No acids, no ultrasound, no extreme temperature fluctuations. Sunlight is safe (its color does not fade). Recharge on rock crystal.
Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Peridot can be confused with green tourmaline, chrysolite, or green garnet (demantoid). However, its typical olive green hue with a slight golden shimmer is quite unique. In the budget segment, green glass is occasionally sold as peridot. Genuine peridot often shows a characteristic double refraction (doubling of the back facets).
