Meaning

The ruby is considered an activity-promoting stone, bringing movement and energy into life. It is said to promote excitement and dynamism, as well as to have an invigorating and rejuvenating effect—while maintaining a healthy balance by counteracting hyperactivity. Ruby brings joyful engagement with life's tasks, activates, and strengthens performance. It is also said to stimulate passion and sexuality.

Alleged effect

In healing stone science, ruby is said to stimulate the circulation and the spleen and to be supportive in infectious diseases, especially intestinal infections. It is said to prevent self-destructive tendencies and help overcome lethargy and exhaustion.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Ruby is a red variety of corundum (Al₂O₃) – the second hardest natural mineral after diamond. Its red color is due to traces of chromium. It crystallizes in the trigonal system. The most sought-after color is "pigeon blood red" (slightly bluish red). Significant locations include Myanmar (Mogok), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Madagascar, and Mozambique. Synthetic rubies have been produced since 1902.

Pflege & Reinigung

Ruby has a Mohs hardness of 9 and is extremely robust – only diamond is harder. It withstands ultrasound, water, and sunlight without any issues. Its color does not fade. The only caution: Ultrasound can cause damage to cracked or filled rubies.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Ruby can be confused with red spinel, red garnet, or red tourmaline. Spinel is slightly lighter and shows no fluorescence. Garnet is softer (7.5). Many historical "rubies" were actually spinels – for example, the "Black Prince's Ruby" in the British crown. In the budget segment, synthetic rubies are sold.
