Mineralogie & Entstehung

Selenite is the transparent, crystalline variety of gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O). With a Mohs hardness of 2, it is one of the softest minerals and can be scratched with a fingernail. Selenite crystals of up to 12 meters in length have been discovered in the Naica mine (Mexico).

Pflege & Reinigung

NEVER clean with water – selenite is water-soluble and will become dull or dissolve! Instead, wipe with a dry, soft cloth. Charge in moonlight or next to rock crystal. Extremely sensitive to scratches and impacts.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Sometimes confused with rock crystal – selenite is much softer (hardness 2 vs. 7) and has a silky, fibrous luster. "Satin Spar" is the fibrous variety that is often sold as selenite – both are gypsum, but true selenite is transparent.
