Mineralogie & Entstehung

Turquoise is a hydrous copper-aluminum phosphate (CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈·4H₂O). It crystallizes in the triclinic system but almost never forms visible crystals – it occurs massive, kidney-shaped, or as veins in rock. The blue color comes from copper, while green tones come from iron. The network-like pattern (matrix) consists of the surrounding host rock. Significant locations include Iran (Nishapur), USA (Arizona, Nevada), China, Egypt, and Afghanistan.

Pflege & Reinigung

Turquoise has a Mohs hardness of 5–6 and is porous. It reacts sensitively to chemicals, perfumes, creams, and even sweat – all of which can change its color. Clean only with a dry cloth. DO NOT immerse in water (porous!). No ultrasound, no acids. Store protected from light and chemicals.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Natural turquoise is rare and expensive. Dyed howlite, dyed magnesite, or resin are often sold as turquoise. Genuine turquoise feels cool and heavy. Stabilized (hardened) turquoise is commonly available and accepted – it is more durable than untreated turquoise. The designation "natural" means untreated.
